Messr's P.L. Van Deventer & Co.
St Louis, Missouri,

Gentlemen:==

Directly upon its receipt I handed your letter, of March 23, to Mr. Blair, who read it through and handed it back to me without making a single comment upon its contents. I was somewhat surprised at so silent a proceeding, and to the present have delayed answering your letter, under the reasonable expectation that Mr. Blair would make some statement or proposition concerning it, which, to date, he has failed to do, for reasons, of course, unknown to me.

I have been in hopes that he would take some steps in the matter that would prove more or less satisfactory to you, but regret to add that I do not know his intentions in regard to it, nor what prospect there is for your getting your pay from him. He has been more or less unwell during the past winter, and has been about but little. Should he say or do anything favorable to you in relation to your claim upon him, I will inform you thereof. I should ever be happy to communicate welcome news to you, but do not know how I can be able to do so, unless you refuse to sell your goods upon credit, especially, to men from Utah, unless they give you ample responsible security.

Respectfully,

Brigham Young
