President's Office,
G. S. Lake City, Dec. 26/64.

Elder James H. Martineau,

Dear Brother,

Your favor of the 15th instant came to hand to-day. The Transit that I own I have use for, and would not like to dispose of it.

The desires which you express respecting your improvement in the Surveying and in Civil and Military Engineering, are praiseworthy, and you can make yourself very useful by carrying them into effect, and making yourself thoroughly acquainted with those branches of Science.

With love I remain
Your Brother in the Lord,

Brigham Young
