John McCarthy,
Richmond, Cache Co.

Dear Brother:

Your letter of March 24th, declaring your innocence of the charge which was brought against you and requesting me to write you an answer, has been received.

I am very glad, very glad indeed, if you are innocent of the things of which you were accused, as I would rather think my brethren innocent than guilty any time, as there is more pleasure in such a thought. You have it in your own power to vindicate your character, and to prove to your brethren that you are as innocent as you assert. While you have the liberty which is every man's personal right, no man can prevent your doing this, as you can so live before God, angels and men as to have the testimony and witness of the Spirit continually with you. A right course, if pursued by you, will secure to you the confidence of your brethren, of angels and your heavenly Father.

I remain Your Brother,

Brigham Young
