Dear Sir:

Your favor of the 10th instant has been received.

I have no employment myself that I could offer you in a Dry Goods Store, and there are so many here who are accustomed to that business, who are in want of employment, that it would be difficult to find a vacancy at present. The place is overstocked also with Medical practitioners, and you could not depend, were you to come here, on business in that line. Before coming here with the intention of making this Territory your permanent residence, it would be will <for you> to thoroughly investigate the principles which we, as a Church, believe and teach, and learn for yourself respecting their truth. It is your privilege, as it is that of every other man, to obtain (a) knowledge of these things for yourself from the Lord. Then, when you possess this knowledge, you will be more able to endure the afflictions and persecutions which (the) people of God have to suffer. Mr. Dwight Eveleth of San Francisco is an Elder of our Church, and by putting yourself into communication with him, he might have it in his power to assist you in obtaining a more comprehensive understanding of the principles of the gospel, and the requirements of the Work.

Under circumstances I should think that it would be better for you to obtain employment there (that is, in Cal.) and take the course which I suggest, and then, when you have obtained the understanding and knowledge of which I speak, you can come on here in possession of a faith that will sustain and comfort you and that will impart a se reliance to you that will repay you for the delay.

Praying the Lord to guide and uphold you in your endeavors to embrace and practice the Truth

I remain Your Serv't in the Lord,

Brigham Young
