Sir:

I have received a letter and Circular from Mr. John Hawthorne setting forth the advantages of the American Air Gas-light Machines. The circular does not state the weight of the Machine, and several particulars which we need to understand here before we view favorably the idea of purchasing.

Every thing that we haul from the Missouri River here costs us, for freight alone, from 20 to 25 cents per pound. What is the cost of the materials from which the Gas is manufactured? What are their weight? and what quantity is there consumed per hour? What is the cost and weight of pipes, &c.?

It is might be advantageous to you to have an Agent here. Wm. S. Godbe, one of our <leading> Merchants and well known in the East, might accept the Agency. He is now in the East. A communication forwarded to Messrs. A. B. Sands & Co., 141 William St., New York, would reach him.

Respectfully,

Brigham Young
