Mr. Elijah Hoyt,
Santa Rosa,
Sonoma Co., Cal.

Dear Sir:

Your letter of May 16th was duly received, but was mislaid. This is the cause of delay in answering.

Your wife was a respectable, good woman, so far as known while she was here. She and her daughter were much respected while here; but they found it pretty hard to get along here, and becoming discouraged, they concluded to go to California. The statement your wife has made to you, as you report it, its correct, in respect to her marriages and the child. The child is hers, and not her daughters. You should treat them well and be kind to them, for they are females of good character, and conducted themselves with great propriety, being occupied while here in teaching school.

Respectfully,

Brigham Young
