Dear Brother:

Your letter of August 16th, was duly received, and has been shown to Alex. McRae -now Bishop of one of the Wards in this City -- the only one whose name you mention, that I have seen since your letter came to hand. He was very glad to hear from you and that you were still alive, and in the faith, and he promised to write to you.

We can readily understand, that as you started, you have beheld scenes of sorrow through our nation rejecting the gospel, and their shedding the blood of the prophets. And they have not yet seen the end of these troubles. They may cry peace, peace; but the word of the Lord must be fulfilled. The blood of innocence must be avenged, and judgements and calamities will be poured out upon the ungodly for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.

The man of whom you speak as having visited you belongs to a class of men who while professing to believe in Joseph the prophet but deny the principles which he taught and which were more precious to them than life itself. Had the kingdom, and the carrying of it forward, rested upon their shoulders it might have gone to destruction for anything they would have cared.

It is the church, as at present organized in these valleys which enables them to
They live by opposing the work of God, and that were not on the earth for them to contend against, there would be nothing of them.

We are spreading abroad through these mountains, and are rapidly becoming the people of the Lord has said we should be. We are and have been opposed, but we still thrive, and we have peace here. The evils which attend war have not been felt by us. The Lord has fulfilled his promise, and the time will come when he that will not take up his sword to fight against his neighbor must needs flee to Zion. The Lord intends to hold a controversy with the nations of the earth.

It seems to us that you would enjoy your       better here than you
We should be pleased to see you out here but you know nothing can the subject.

With love, and praying the Lord to bless you, I remain
Your Brother in the Lord,
