Dear Sir:

Your letter making enquiries respecting the expense of coming to this City and the best route by which to travel, &c., has been received. It is difficult to estimate the expense, as it depends altogether upon the style of traveling in which the emigrant sees fit to indulge. A single man who is hardy and active could cross to this City from the Railway Terminus at comparatively little expense, after purchasing his provisions and paying at the rate of twelve cents a pound carriage for it and his baggage. If a family were emigrating they would be under the necessity of buying a team and wagon and joining some company travelling to this city. Oxen or mules could be selected and used according to the means and taste of the purchaser. The Railway fare from Cleveland to the Terminus of the Rail Road can probably be ascertained better by you in the East or at Cleveland than by myself here.

We are willing that any person should join our Society who complies with the requirements of Jesus, namely, believing in him, repenting of, and forsaking his sins, and being baptized in water by one having authority for their remission, and then having hands laid upon him.

Accompanying this I forward you an epitome of our faith, which will give you some idea of our doctrines and of the requirements which have to be complied with by those <who> enter our Church.

Mechanics do tolerably well in this country. We have not much money in circulation; but where men are economical and prudent they can accumulate property. Should you with to come you can correspond with Mr. W.H. Miles, P.O. Box 3957 New York City, and he will advise you when companies of our emigrants will be likely to leave the East for the frontiers and at what point they will take their departure on the Plains.

I remain your Servant in the Lord
