Mrs. James Street,
New York City.

Dear Madam:

As Hiram B. Clawson, Esq., is about to go East on business, and will probably call upon you, I take the opportunity of dropping you a few lines by him.

When I heard of the sudden demise of Mr Street I was much shocked and could scarcely credit the news. He appeared so strong and healthy and so buoyant in spirit when I last saw him, that he was one of the last persons whom I should have thought would have passed off so suddenly. My feelings towards him were those of warm friendship. Our business intercourse was of the most agreeable character, and I learned to respect and love him. I mourn his loss as a friend; but how much greater your bereavement -- you who have had to part with a kind and loving husband! I deeply sympathize with you in your affliction, and if I could afford you any consolation by any words of condolence I could write, they should be written most willingly

May heaven bless and comfort you, dear Madam, and may He who has said He would be a husband to the widow and a Father to the fatherless, be your Friend and Protector, and give you the sustenance you need.

With sentiments of esteem, I remain
Your Friend.
