Dear Bro:-

I have received a letter in which it is stated that some months since Bro. Peter Van Valkenberg called upon the "Wood & Mann Steam Engineering Co. Utica, N. Y." with a letter from his Bishop that he was a "Mormon" and would perform precisely as he agreed, that he purchased a saw-mill & steam engine paying half down & giving his notes for $2800. for the balance, to be paid in six months, but nine months have elapsed & no settlement made.

The letter further states, that Peter Van Valkenberg informed the company that it was a law with our people that a debt contracted in that manner must be paid, if not, the purchaser would be cut off from the Church.

We wish you to inquire into this matter & ascertain the facts in the case & report them to this office.

If the facts are as stated, we would like to know what Bro. Van Valkenberg intends doing about it.

This should be attended to immediately.

Your Bro. in the Gospel
