Mr. Wm. H. Shephard

Dear Sir:--

Yours of the 23. ult. concerning the publication of a chromo oil portrait was received. I cannot say positively what success this enterprise would meet with, as much would depend on the character & execution of the work.

Savage & Ottinger & other Photographers & Artists have done their best to provide our citizens with Photographic Portraits of myself & others in various styles of art, & I am informed by Mr. Savage that the publishers of the Art Union are engaged upon a first class steel engraving, a portrait of myself in the best style. I think it probable that if you were to write to Messrs Savage & Ottinger of this City, they would furnish you, better than I can, the desired information.

Yours with respect
