Chas. H. Berryhill, Esqr.
Iowa City.

Dear Sir:

Yours of the 21st inst. has been received. Prest. Young has just started on a lengthy tour through the settlements leaving me to attend to his correspondence.

I have looked up former correspondence on the subject & now submit to you a portion of it, which I trust will prove satisfactory.

On the 24th March last, Prest Young wrote to Mr. Hummer as follows:--... "I have received so many communications from different parties on this subject (the Church Bell) that I would like it much better if the discussion were agreeable ended.... I hereby notify you that I will give it up to you or to the first properly authorized person who will produce bona fide proof of ownership & authority to receive it & who will refund the money expended by me thereon, which is between six & seven hundred dollars". Again, in reply to Mr. Hummer he wrote on the 15th May, viz: "As to the proof of ownership I do not ask for any judicial process or legal formality further than the affidavits of 2 or more reliable persons whose veracity is not likely to be a subject of question."

So far as I know, no further communication has been received from Mr. Hummer since, you can therefore see how the matter rests.

Yours with respect
Daniel H. Wells
