Hon. Geo. F. Train,
New York City.

Dear Sir:-

Yours of the 18th & 19th ult clippings from the N.Y. Express", &c. have been received. A press of business has prevented my writing you sooner, which I trust will sufficiently excuse me.

Prest Young & Smith started on an exploring trip to the Southern country previous to the arrival of your favor, & will not probably return for 5 or 6 weeks yet. In his absence Prest. Young desired me to attend to his correspondence

The base slanders to which you allude, I know to be false. With regard to such, we have invariably acted on the let-alone policy. Were we to undertake to refute all the slanders retailed against us, an army of Clerks would be insufficient. This is no doubt one of the very many efforts brought to bear, to raise a furore against us, such as those, which, at different periods of our existence as a people, have, in times past, too often been successful.

By reference to a circular just received, I find that on St. Patrick's anniversary you are announced to Lecture to the friends of Temperance. & others at the Cooper Institute. This is a glorious cause & well worthy the earnest support of every philanthropist of every creed, social, political, or religious. Success
to the movement.

Yours with respect.
Daniel H Wells
