Mr. Geo. E. Smith,
care of Collins & Co. 335. Broadway, N.Y. (Bo. O. Box 3696.)

Dear Sir:-

Yours of the 14th inst. has been received. Prest. Young is from home on a somewhat lengthy tour & has left me to attend to his correspondence.

I fully agree with you that the course taken by the "Powers that be" with regard to Polygamy is extremely "annoying," but I am far from thinking that a change of location, is the only alternative left us.

It remains to be proven that we cannot live here in the exercise of religious & constitutional liberty, before we are willing to admit it. The very thought is an insult to the good sense of every American & I hardly think they would permit so deep a disgrace to attach itself to our country's record. It is not for me to say, however, & I should gladly have forwarded your communication to Prest. Young, had it contained any definite proposition. If you think proper to write again, stating the proposed location &c. I can forward it. We telegraph 302 Miles & express the rest of the distance.

Yours with respect
Daniel H Wells
