Chas. H. Berryhill Esqr
Iowa City, Iowa.

Dear Sir:-

On my return from a trip to the Southern country, a letter from you to Mr. Daniel H. Wells of this city was placed in my hands, concerning a bell said to be the property of the Iowa Presbyterian Church.

The bell referred to was brought here by a Mr. Mott, of Iowa, on his way to California, who offered to sell it for six or seven hundred dollars; we paid him for the bell. Soon afterwards we learned by rumour that the bell belonged to the Iowa Presbyterian Church -- that it had been stolen by the Priest from the people, and by the people from the Priest and finally found its way here. I immediately instituted an enquiry to ascertain from the parties from whom the bell was said to have been stolen, and I now suppose the rumour was correct.

The bell you can have on proof of ownership by paying the charges. Thus far I have written. I am still writing to let you know all that I can concerning it, and now if you are disposed to prove the property, pay charges, and take the bell away. I shall be very glad to have you do so, if not, you will do me a great kindness not to trouble me any more about it.

Yours with respect
Brigham Young

P.S. The bell we have never used, & probably never should use it, it is not such a one as we want. When I saw it last it was boxed up safe & is, I believe in good condition.
