Mr John Horan
Mitchell. Perth Co.
Upper Canada.

Sir:

Late in the fall of 1868, Mr. St Clair and the young lady whom he claimed to be his daughter, arrived in this city, with the intention of lecturing. Miss St Clair was however, taken sick shortly after their arrival, of mountain fever attended by a medical gentleman from Camp Douglass, but gradually sank, and died on 23rd January following. She never delivered a lecture in this city, and it was not until quite lately that we learned that she was not the daughter of Mr St Clair, and that his real names was Smyth. After your daughter's death Mr St Clair sent for his wife, who came here and lectured, and hence traveled west and north lecturing as they went. This spring Mr St Clair again returned with a young lady and gentleman, who I was informed were the brother and sister of the deceased young lady.

Whilst Mr St Clair was here he conducted himself with propriety, and I have never had any opportunity of learning of his private business and consequently know nothing about it. Your son and daughter being with him, would be in a much better position to make the enquiries you desire, and could do so with far better grace.

Yours Respectfully.
