1870 October 15 Letter to James H. Fay

Title

1870 October 15 Letter to James H. Fay

Description

Advice is offered on the best emigration route. The unconstitutional anti-polygamy law seems to serve as both intimidation and a tactic to prevent Utah's inclusion in the union.

Dear Sir:

Your favor of 22nd ult is to hand. I am not in a position to give you accurate information regarding the best route to take to reach this city from your home, still I believe that you can get a through ticket from Baltimore to this city, either by St Louis or Omaha. Our immigrants generally come via New York and Omaha, but I think that would be a very round about way for you.

You ask me regarding the anti-polygamy law of 1862. What have been its results? As yet no cases have been brought up before the Courts on the indictments of a grand jury, for breaking that law; consequently we have had no chance of testing its constitutionality, for, I presume, you are aware, we do not deem it in accordance with the constitution of our Country. Thus far it has remained a dead letter, a kind of "rod in pickle," held over our backs to intimidate us; at the same time our inattention to its unconstitutional clauses, is made a pretext for keeping us out of the Union; but we sincerely believe that the time will come, when this objection will be withdrawn. Trusting in the righteousness of our cause we can afford to wait.

Praying the Lord to bless you, in your search for Truth

I remain, Yours Very Respectfully.
Geo. Reynolds.
