Mr. James T. Plowman, Sr.
12, E. Lombard St. Baltimore,

Dear Sir,

Yours of the 13th inst. has been received. We are not strenuous on the point you allude to, and have followed the practice of the early christians by observing the Sabbath on Sunday, in commemoration of the Saviour's resurrection.

There is no revelation given to the Church in modern times designating the particular day of the week, and we are perfectly satisfied as it is.

The Lord intended that man should rest from labour one day in seven, that is the essential object, and we hold that the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath.

With this view alone, it would not be material which of the seven days was adopted, but, as the sacrament of the Lord's supper was introduced, it seems to have been the purpose to commemorate the resurrection and rest one day in seven at the same time.

Our religion enters into every act of our lives, and if we carry out the practice, we worship God without ceasing, and not alone every seventh day.

The following passage occurs in a revelation given to the prophet Joseph Smith in August 1831:-- "And that thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world, thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up they sacraments upon my holy day; for verily this is a day appointed unto you to rest from your labors, and to pay thy devotions unto the Most High; nevertheless thy vows shall be offered up in righteousness on all days, and at all times; but remember that on this the Lord's day, thou shalt offer thine oblations and thy sacraments unto the Most High, confessing they sins unto they brethren, and before the Lord.

Yours with respect.
