Captn. J. H. Simpson
Corps Topographical Engineers

Sir:--

Your note requesting me to deliver to you the ring which belonged to Mr. Kern who was massacred by the Indians in 1853, came to hand several days since; but as the circumstances connected with the ring had been forgotton by me, I was unable to give you a satisfactory answer until now.

In looking over some old correspondence I found a copy of a letter addressed at the time to Lieut. Beckwith and Capt. Morris which explains all I had to do with it, as well as the disposition then made of it.  I take pleasure in enclosing a copy of that letter, which will give you the desired information.

The part of the Odometer obtained from the Indians, and which was sent to those gentlemen was returned to me as a present, it being of no use to them.

I have the honor to be,
Very Respectfully,
Your Obedt Servt.
