Mr. C. O. Gerberding,
San Francisco, California,

Sir:-
Circumstances have prevented an earlier reply to your note of Dec. 10, 1861.

Your proposition is altogether novel to me; and my inexperience in the matter, the stringency of our market, and the numerous requirements for the use of funds in channels more directly pressing, require me, at least for the present, to decline making the purchase you propose.

These considerations, also, so far as I am aware, have like weight with such of my friends as have sufficient cash means for engaging in such an operation.

It would please me to see the Camels have a fair trial in Utah. and should I learn of anyone here wishing to purchase, I will endeavor to inform you by the first opportunity.

Respectfully,

Brigham Young
