Roger Orton (ca. 1799-1851)
Ca. 1799–1851. Miller. Son of Roger Orton and Esther Avery. Moved to Geneseo, Ontario Co., New York, by 1810. Married Clarissa Bicknell, ca. 1822. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ordained an elder, by 1834. Participated in Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri, 1834. Appointed to high council in Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, and to First Quorum of Seventy, by 1835. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Excommunicated, 1837, at Kirtland; later restored to membership. Appointed a president of the Seventy, ca. 1844; never accepted, and appointment later rescinded. Moved to Des Moines Co., Iowa Territory, by 1840. Lived in Augusta, Des Moines Co., 1845. Moved to Lee Co., Iowa, by 1850. Died in Iowa.
