Your letter of Nov. 4, with inclosure, did not come to hand until yesterday, and I have to inform you that the condition of our business and finances, at home and abroad, is such that at present I am unable to promise assistance to any toward their emigrating next year. Money alone can be used in our emigration, except perhaps from the frontiers to this place in case we succeed in sending oxen and wagons to Florence next spring, and of money we have not enough to so much as carry on the public business as we could be pleased to. We are doing all we can, and would most gladly at once assist all who need assistance, especially to escape from the bondage in Babylon, but the Church, like individuals, can operate only as the Lord opens the way and the requisite means are provided.

Trusting that, from time to time, the way will open for the gathering of the honest poor as the Lord pleases in his wisdom, I remain,
