Bishop Philo T. Farnsworth,
Beaver, U.T.,

Dear Brother:-In reply to yours of the 17th, inst., I have to inform you that with us it is customary to consult the presiding authority of a place in so important a matter as marriage, and also in relation to dances and other public amusements, and to such a course there can be no good objection by any one loving good order and the welfare of the community in which he resides.

The County Court has authority to regulate the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors, under "an Act regulating the manufacture, sale, or other disposal of intoxicating liquors," passed by the Assembly at its session of last winter. If your County Court does not and will not properly exercise its authority under said "Act" you will have to institute such other steps as will accomplish the desired end.

It is a disgrace to any settlement, especially those professing to be Latter DaySaints, to abuse themselves and others by the improper use of ardent spirits; but to our regret some are and will be thus weak and unwise such persons cannot reasonably object to efficient steps being taken to prevent their interfering with the just rights, peace, and welfare of their neighbors.

Your Brother in the Gospel

Brigham Young
