1861 July 24 Letter to H. B. Clawson

Charles Decker can haul the purchases from Fort Bridger. The brethren should not bid against each other. Money is in route.

Elder H. B. Clawson,
Fort Bridger, U. T.,

Dear Brother:-Br. F. Little as yet meets with no success in getting funds, for which reason he has no present prospect for making a trip to Bridger. Should you get no different advices in regard to br. Fera's prospects, it will be best to arrange with br. Charles Decker to use his teams there in hauling for us, if you make any purchases, and Fera does not come there.

Say to the brethren there wishing to buy, that my advice to them is to use a little wisdom in their operations, and have a mutual understanding and work to each other's hands, and to not bid against one another on a single article. I would like a few tools, a mowing machine, &c., as we spoke of before you left, but not enough to bid against the brethren and run articles up, for I had rather have you return without having made a single bid, than to bid against the brethren; I trust the wisdom of this counsel will at once be seen and practiced upon by all the brethren who may be there; but whether others observe it or not, I presume you will not vary from it.

Fera, just as he left for home, said that he might be down again to-night, in hopes to get funds to start in the morning, but I think it very doubtful.

The Pony of this morning brought a few lines from br. H. W. Lawrence, dated in Florence, July 11, in which he states that all our immigration, &c. is under way, that he hoped soon to see us, and that br. Hooper and family started on the 11th.

No important event of to-day has come to our knowledge.

Your Brother in the Gospel,

Brigham Young

P. S. Br David O. has just come in and informs me that Dr. Whitmore has $125.00 with him which you can have; and that he has $230.00 to send with these lines, if Fera goes in the morning, or he finds other responsible opportunity, otherwise you can, if you need, borrow that amount of the brethren there, and I will refund it here.
