Hon. John M. Bernhisel, M. C.
Washington City, D. C.,

Dear Brother:

Your favors of March 14 and 25 are to hand, but those of the 21st and 24thMarch, as advised in yours of the 25th, have not arrived. There is some interruption in mail transportation between Independence Rock and Sandys, said to be by Indians; but whether this be the case, or whether some persons are taking measures to induce Government to send troops along the line to gratify private designs to money making, &c., is not yet clear, though I am inclined to the opinion that the last named is the cause or source of what little interuption has happened, and I doubt not that 20 orderly well behaved men can safely travel any portion of the route, so far as Indians are concerned.

Br's Hooper and West were to have started East, on the 22nd inst., in the stage, but Mr. Joseph Holladay told br. Hooper that the mail stock had been withdrawn from the line between Bridger and Independence Rock, and that he should not send out another mail until further advised.

Since writing the foregoing br's Hooper and West have concluded not to wait any longer for the mail, but will start in the morning with an escort under the command of Col. Robt. T. Burton, who will accompany them as far as may be necessary.

The mail, when carried, is made up for this City six times a week, Sunday being excepted.

Enclosed I forward a power of Attorney from Mrs Ann Matson.

All's well. Br's Hooper and West will inform you on church home news.

Your Brother in the Gospel
