Since last writing to you, Aug. 6th., I have received from Bro C. W. West a letter dated July 13, one from yourself of July 13th, one from yourself and Bro Hooper of same date, and one from yourself of Aug. 2d, also two, June 18th & July 11th, from Brigham, with all of which I was well pleased. The "reasons why the state of Deseret should be admitted into the Union", as per copy in your favor of July 13th, are well conceived, admirably worded and
arranged, and are in truth incontrovertible.
The continued cheering News in relation to yourself, your associates in the ministry and the Saints and the progress of the work in general throughout your Presidency are highly gratifying. I was also much pleased with the field of labor to which you had appointed my son Brigham, with your associating him in his youth and inexperience, with so good and suitable a person as is Bro W. C. Staines, and thus Brigham [gap in typescript] willing to at once enter upon the path of usefulness in the line of duty. As advised in my letter to you on the 6th inst., I wish you to keep Brigham mostly in the field, as there he can e most useful to himself and others. I informed him upon this point in my letter to him of same date, also that I wished him to be frugal and economical, and learn how poor folks lived and got along, with permission to draw [?] you at times for funds as he may really need, both of you bearing in mind [?] only the necessity, but also the real duty of prudent expenditures. By this [?] I shall inform Brigham that I wish and expect him to be diligent and faithful in teaching the doctrines of life and salvation which he knows, untill about the 1st of June next, when I should like to have him in company with some proper persons of your selection, visit the brethren and various places on the continent, continuing his visit, if he pleases, long enough to permit his [?] back to Liverpool and start for home about the 1st of August next, from [?]
Day after to-morrow, Sept 1st, I propose starting with a small company on a visit to our most southern settlements, expecting to return in season to get rested before our October Conference.
Yesterday, 29th, Bro Lewis Bronson arrived with the first company of this year's immigration, some 212 persons, and 48 Wagons, and we expect that all of this year's freight and immigration will be safely before and by the 25th of October.
I enclose an order from Henry and Emma Arnold upon Jane Farmer of L10-0-0, payable to you, which please collect and advise me; also a power of attorney from Sister Anna Randall, constituting you her lawful attorney for the purpose therein set forth, in which capacity I doubt not you will act to the best circumstances will permit.
I have drawn upon you draft 255 for L4.0.0, favor of Henry Lloyd, Slackwood, Monmouth, Wales.
Work on the Temple is progressing very favorably, the people are peaceful, industrious and prosperous, and the harvests good
