President

U. P. R. Company,

Dear Sir:

On my return from a trip to our southern settlements, I found [gap in typescript] After perusing your favor of the 8th inst. I improve the earliest opportunity to inform [gap in typescript] I will endeavor to carry out the views and wishes of yourself and your official associates, in acting as commissioners in opening in this city a [gap in typescript] subscription to the stock of the Union Pacific [gap in typescript] Railroad Company. How far my success in thus acting will meet your expectations I am unable to say, for Utah is not yet high in the class of capitals, termed current [gap in typescript]; but she is comparatively rich in labor, which is really the foundation and essential in constructing a work so great and prospectively so beneficial. I trust that what we may come short in subscribing money, we may be able [gap in typescript] make up in labor [gap in typescript] However, I inform [gap in typescript] of the present monied ability of the inhabitants of Utah, but presume our chief assistance will be in labor.

Such information and advices as I may at times have, that will be of use [?] forwarding so noble an undertaking will be most cheerfully imparted at all fitting opportunities.

At even date I telegraph to you my acceptance of the appointment you have confirmed upon me, and a request for the necessary books and instructions at the earliest convenient date.

That you may yet find time at an early day to make your contemplated overland trip, assuring you a cordial welcome to our Mountain City, is the wish of [?]

Very Respectfully,
