1862 November 22 Letter to Thomas A. Lyne

Description

Brigham cannot hire Lyne as an actor right now but if he would like to move to Utah he would probably do well as an instructor.

Dear Sir:

Accept my thanks for your kind wishes in behalf of our efforts towards furnishing facilities for interesting, amusing and instructing the public through the medium of properly conducted theatrical entertainments. For this and kindred purposes I have erected a large and commodious building, which is expected to be sufficiently completed for occupancy by about the middle of next month,

As the Drama is still in its infancy here, and with a view to encourage it, and in consideration of the great outlay consequent upon the erection of so large a theatre in this distant region, a company of Amateurs--lovers of the Drama--have volunteered their services to play gratuitously for the present, which will preclude my entering into any arrangement with you as an actor.

Most of the actors however being young and measurably inexperienced in many things pertaining to the profession, are anxious to secure the services of an experienced, temperate, and qualified person as a preceptor. So far as we know, we think you would suit, provided we can enter into an arrangement which will be satisfactory to you. I think that besides the theatrical corps many young persons in our City would be pleased to take lessons in elocution, and I think in this way you might do  comparatively well.

If, upon the perusal of the foregoing, you conclude that it would be mutually beneficial to us for you to come on here, we would be pleased to have you do so, and have inclosed a pass for yourself and family. Let me know if you are coming, when, and if you design bringing your family, inclosed is a note authorizing the Telegraph Agent at Denver to transmit any message you may have to send.

Hoping to hear from you soon, I am respectfully Yours &c &c

Brigham Young

P. S. Should you conclude not to come, please to return to the Stage pass.
