Dear Brother:-
Your very welcome and good letter of June 27 is before me for which please accept my thanks. We were all much rejoiced to learn of your good health, faith and Spirits, and of the general prosperity of the work in the British Isles.
On the 19th of August, in company with Pres's Kimball and Wells, Elders W. Woodruff, J. Taylor, G. A. Smith and C. C. Rich and several others, I started for Logan, Cache Valley, where we arrived on the 21st, held a two days meeting there, and returned on the 26th, having also held meetings in some of the settlements on the rout. We enjoyed an unusually pleasant trip, and had the gratification on our return of welcoming br. H. S. Eldredge and my son John W. who arrived from the states on the 25th; and on the 27th br. C. W. West and my son Brigham rejoiced us by their arrival in safty and excellent spirits, and br West's health much improved.
On the 29th of August Cap. John R. Murdock and company arrived, the first of the ten church trains that went from here to Florence last spring. The rest of the trains and the independant companies are all getting along well, so far as we learn and are all expected to arrive in good time and condition.
Work on the Temple is progressing favorably, and home affairs are moving along peacefully, prosperously and harmoniously. I am informed that the new Governor J. D. Doty, professes that he will confine his official acts to the legitimate duties of his office, and if he carries out his profession we will have no disturbance from that quarter.
Ex-Chief Justice Kinney, our present Delegate to Congress, left in the s[word cut off] for the states on the 29th ult., purposing to attend to some business on the Frontiers and then repair to Washington some month earlier than congress meets, that he may become posted in the feelings, movements, &c., there, previous to commence his Congressional labors.
Br. James Ferguson died on the 30th, and was buried on the 31st ult.
The season has been very dry and hot, and still is, though prospects are flattering for abundant crops of fruits, grain, and vegetables, take the Territory through, and so far as fruit trees and vines are in bearing.
My health, that of your family, so far as I learn, and of the people generally is good, though there is at present above the usual number complaining more or less. From various sources we learn cheering news of your diligence, faithfulness, and good works in your ministry, for which and for your continuance in well doing you have had and will ever have the prayrs of myself and all faithful Saints.
In regard to the wicked I shall endeavor, as hitherto, to use all the caution I naturally possess, aided by the dictates of the Holy Spirit, and doubt not but that all things will work together for the advancement and welfare of Isreal.
Blow the Gospel trumpet long and loud, for you are able, do all the good you can, and bring souls to Zion, for I want to see you a perfect giant in the Gospel when you come home.
