Mr. David Brown
Jacobsville, Lander Co., Nevado Territory

As I know nothing of the value of your receipt for tanning, I am not disposed to pay money at a venture. Should you conclude to send me your receipt with the plain manner of using it, and upon fair trial it proves useful, upon your satisfying me that you have the legal right to sell the patent to Utah, I shall be ready to treat with you for it on reasonable terms.

In the meantime, pending its trial and propositions for sale and purchase and secret of the patent will not be divulged, and, if I finally decline buying, your rights therein will be respected so far as I am concerned.

Respectfully

Brigham Young
