Sir:-

Please accept my thanks for the respectful proffer, contained in Your note of the 24th inst., of your valuable professional abilities, in aid of the amateur performers in our theatre. But as our actors all play without salary, the community not having reached that point in play-going that will warrant our paying salaries, and as some of the proposals which I have understood you have received have the inducement of remuneration, which I do not feel able to extend, I find myself constrained to decline your kindly offered proposal.
