President's Office,
G. S. L. City, Dec. 8/64

To the Bishops and Brethren North who wish to get Cattle herded:

Black Beard, or George, the Bearer of this Letter, is desirous of taking Cattle to herd. He will get some other Indians, as many as he needs, to help him in this labor. If any of the Brethren wish to get their Cattle herded, these Indians can be employed to do it. If you should hire them, they should be furnished provisions and occasionally a beef as they may require it, and paid as you would pay White men, even if you do not pay them so much, so that they may be encouraged and trained in habits that will have an elevating effect upon them.

I remain Your brother in the Lord,

Brigham Young
