Gentlemen:

In conversation with Mr. Jas. Street, on the subject of the contract which I have taken to furnish the poles for the N. S. Pacific Telegraph Co., I mentioned that I should probably need some funds as soon as I commenced operations, and asked whether I could get them. He said that I could, and he would make an arrangement with you to that effect, though he did not want that stated in the
agreement

As I am remitting a quantity of money to the East by my son, Mr Clawson and some other gentlemen who are going down to-day, it has suggested itself to me that, as money is likely to be very scarce here, I had better draw on you for twenty-five thousand Dollars ($25,000 00/100) and retain that amount instead of sending it out of the Territory, that I may have the necessary funds to carry on the business of furnishing the poles without interruption

We have had a very severe winter, and a great quantity of Snow has fallen, which is disappearing under the influence of the genial weather of the past week. It has been impossible to do any thing of any consequence in getting out the poles until quite recently, and now we are commencing operations in earnest, and I hope soon to be able to report favorably to you of our progress.
