Bishop Wm Maughan
Wellsville, Cache Co.,

Dear Brother:-About the 3rd of July last, John Kelly and John Nelson of your place stole four head of horned Cattle, which they sold for $140. and divided the proceeds between them, making $70 apiece. After the discovery of the theft, John Kelly left for other parts, leaving a horse on the range and a saddle in the care of John Nelson. Nelson stood his trial and was fined and the fine was paid by Nelson's father. Kelly's horse and saddle were also taken and used to help make up for the theft. This is John Kelly's Statement.

He has called upon me, and expressed a desire to make up in any way in his power that he can, without being sent to prison, for what he has done; in other words, he desires to atone for his wrong, and make the parties wronged whole for their loss through him. And he also wishes to have the privilege to go back there to settle. He
has written to you, expressing this desire; but up to the present, has had no reply to his letter.

If his statement, as above written, is substantially true, you had better let him Settle up and make reparation to those whom he has injured, and go back there and stay.

This is the first and only scrape that he has ever been in, and he feels very miserable about it, and is very anxious to redeem himself from the disgrace which he has brought upon himself

Your Brother,
Brigham Young
