Dear Brother:-

By letter from Bro. Musser, who has not reached here, I am advised that the stone which has been dug in the vicinity of the mill site is deemed unsuitable for <the> foundation work of the factory. This being the case it will be better for you to use the volcanic rock, which bro. M. <tells me> will be laid by the brothers Everett at the same price as the sand stone. I want the building to be substantial and durable. He also says that you express a preference for 12 arms in the wheel rather than eight. I certainly want more than eight arms in the wheel, and would rather have sixteen than eight. If the latter number be put in, your stuff will not need to be more than two inches and a half, after it is dressed; sixteen arms of this size will, I think, answer every purpose. With this number you can put four mortices through the shaft for eight arms, the other arms can be dovetailed and keyed in between; of course, short arms will answer for that purpose. If you use twelve arms, your stuff should not be less than three inches after it is dressed.

I understand the winter has been very severe with you for Dixie; but that you have commenced work on the foundation. I hope that you will push the work ahead as fast as practicable, and I should like to hear from you from time to time in relation to the progress of the work.

With love, I remain Your Brother,
Brigham Young

P. S. You can use your judgment about making a small basement under the building.
