President's Office,
Gt. Salt Lake City,
July 24th, 1866.

Mr. Theo. W. Curtis,
City.

Dear Brother:

Your letter of to-day's date has been received and the contents noted.

I think that going abroad to obtain schooling will be labor spent in vain. Should you go, you would necessarily have to expend considerable means, and what special branch of study can you pursue, East or West, that you can not follow here? There may be some advantages that you might have there over those to be enjoyed here; but they are more than counterbalanced by the disadvantages with which you would have to contend. If you desire to study the languages, mathematics or any other science, we have men here who understand those branches as well as any you would be likely to find elsewhere.

If I were to suggest any line study to you, it would be that you qualify yourself to be a Civil Engineer. This is a healthy and agreeable profession, and one that in the course of events is likely to be in demand.

With love, I remain Your Brother,

Brigham Young
