Attorneys at Law,
Neb. City, N. T.

Gentlemen:

Your favor of 13th. ult. containing a statement of the case commenced in Nebraska City last July against N. K. Whitney, Orson & P. P. Pratt, H. C. Kimball and myself has been received. If such debt ever existed, I have no knowledge of it. There was no transaction in which myself and the gentlemen named were associated as partners. We never have had dealings in such a capacity. I think it a trumped up affair throughout. Had such a debt had an actual existence, and payment been made in Kirtland money, what reason have they had for permitting it to sleep so long? After leaving Ohio I moved to Missouri, where myself and the gentlemen named were well known. Moving from that State to the States of Illinois, I resided at Nauvoo, Hancock Co., six or seven years, and during that time never heard of the existence of such a claim.

Please inform me what you think will be the cost of contesting this case upon its merits, and carrying it forward to judgement.

I am Yours &c.,
