Dear Brother:

Bro. Orson Arnold writes to me that you would set some men to work at the Home Telegraph Line, if they were needed. I wish that you would do so. Should you do so, I would like you to have a trustworthy, honest man examine the Poles and see that they are -- every one -- at least four (4) feet in the ground, and <the dirt> well rammed around them and perfectly solid. Where the ground is soft, there should be gravel and stones hauled and packed around the Pole, and well banked up above the water. We want the setting of the Poles, and all the work connected therewith to be thorough, that we will not have the Line to repair every little while. Great care must be taken, not to split the blocks in screwing in the Insulators, not to injure the gutta-percha.

Your Bro.
