Dear Brother:

A sister by the name of Emily Grames, who is the wife of Brother Peter Bell of your ward, has come to me and made complaints respecting the treatment which she has received from him and his first wife. I have had her Statement written down, and send a copy herewith, which you can read and from it know how to proceed to investigate the affair. Her appearance was very wretched. You can hear the husband's statement without showing him hers.

With love Your Brother

Brigham Young

Copy of Sister Grames Statement.

She was sealed to her husband last Fall. Since then she has been abused by his first wife, who, on one occasion, threatened her life with a loaded pistol, in consequence of which Sister Grames fled to her Mothers. This was while they were living on the Sevier. Since then the first wife has called her bad names, has said she was only a machine for men to use, and has accused her of having intercourse with other men before her marriage with Bro. Bell. He has never ill used her, but has been very cross at times, and has talked about whipping her. Her clothing is very wretched; she has the dress on now that she wore when sealed to her husband, and he states that she has not earned the clothing she now possesses.
