James M. Ellis, Esq.

Sir:

Your letter of yesterday's date has been received. I have made inquiries respecting the matter to which you refer, but have not been able to learn anything about it. Until your letter informed me, I was entirely ignorant of your having sought an interview with Miss Adams in one of the anterooms. But, if you did as you say, -- invite her to a private interview in a private room, or apart from the company, on the evening of the Ball, I think it was a course of conduct very unbecoming in a gentleman. She is young and inexperienced, and would, through a desire to accommodate, consent to an interview without reflecting upon the inpropriety of your request -- a request which you, being an almost entire stranger to her, should not have made of her, especially to ask her to meet you alone and unaccompanied by any of her friends.

I trust that this will be satisfactory to you.
