Dear Sir:

Your favor of July 31 requesting a copy of the best map we have of this Territory reached here on the 14th instant, while I was absent on a visit to Bear Lake Valley.

It would afford me great pleasure to comply with your request, were it in my power to do so; but we have no good map of this Territory. Capt. Stansbury's is the best, as far as it goes, of any that we have, and that is very limited, being confined to Salt Lake, Utah Lake and their borders. By traveling and examining the country we find all the maps which have been published incorrect in many particulars, but we have been so situated thus far, having cities to build, settlements to establish and all the labors incident to a new country to perform, that we have not had the time or the means to spare to make the necessary surveys to obtain data for a correct map. Whenever such a map shall be completed it will be a gratification to me to forward it to you.

I remain, Respectfully,

Brigham Young
