Dear Sir:

Yours of the 2nd instant is at hand. You ask if you can find something to do to maintain yourself and mother if you were to come to this City. We have all that we can do here, and there are a thousand labors that we would like to perform pressing upon us which we have not time to attend to.

There has been no lack of employment here for active, industrious men. Money is not plentiful, and is not often paid for labor. The absence of it in any quantities has force us into an system of exchange or barter, and we trade with one another for such articles as we need. The best route is across the plains from the East
