Dear Sir:

Your letter, containing a statement respecting the loan of two hundred dollars in gold to Stephen B. Rose of this city, came duly to hand. On its receipt I communicated with Mr. Rose, but received no response from him. He was afterwards prostrated with a very severe sickness from which he was just recovered. I again communicated to him the contents of your letter and requested his reply, which I have just received. He says that when you sent to Mr. Sloan he sold his wagon to raise the money to pay you with; but Mr Sloan could not find the note that he had given you. For this reason he did not pay him. He adds "At the present time it is out of my power to settle this debt. I have had so much sickness in my family this summer that I have gone behind very much; but if I live till next Spring I will pay Mr. Bedell through the Summer."

It will afford me great satisfaction to render you any assistance in my power in the collection of this debt.

Respectfully
Brigham Young
