Gentlemen,

In reply to your favor regarding Mr. L.G. Rice, I have simply to state, that I do not know anything of the business transactions between yourselves and Mr. Rice, nor the origin of the debt for which he gave you his note. He is now in this city, and I consider fully able to pay up the note, and should it be lodged in a banking house in this City, as you suppose, it can doubtless be collected.
