Dear Sirs,

In reply to yours of the 29th ult. I have to say that, the Gospel is free to all -- its first principles are, Faith; Repentance; Baptism for the remission of sins; & the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Saints are instructed to gather together, this is incorporated in their faith & acted upon as fast as their circumstances will permit, but the expense of emigration is borne by the emigrant. There are cases where Saints in poor circumstances have money advanced to assist them but they are, generally, those who have proven their faith & integrity. We are compelled to this course as our funds are limited.

If you are disposed to extend your investigations of the truth, I would refer you to Mr. John Brown, 2006 Nth. 14th St. St Louis.

With best wishes,
Yours very respectfully

Brigham Young
