President's Office,
Feb. 3rd 1869.

James Lavender,
Halliday's Settlement:

Dear Bro:
I received; your letter expressing a strong desire to return to your former mission and bear testimony of the truth of the holy Gospel.

We feel assured that if you are faithful and diligent you may do much good, therefore, you are at liberty to go in the spring or whenever you can make your arrangements.

Go in meekness and humility; with a prayerful heart, with a fervent desire to do good, and a full determination to do no evil and we can freely say, God bless you, and peace go with you.

As to your deafness, it has always been my counsel, Let the doctors alone and I see no reason to change it in your case.

Hoping this will prove satisfactory
Yours in the Gospel

Brigham Young
