Mr. John C. Cashman
Prest "Young Men's Literary Union"
Pittsfield, Mass.

Dear Sir:

The invitation of the "Young Men's Literary Union" to Prest. Brigham Young to lecture in Pittsfield and other places, has been received.

The President is now absent on a tour through the North Eastern part of the Territory & will not return for 10 or 12 days. It is not probable, however, that he would entertain your proposition, as his traveling is confined to the Settlements in this Territory.

I would respectfully call your attention to the fact that Professor Orson Pratt of this City is now in New York. Mr. Pratt is a Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles-- he has been engaged in preaching the Gospel (or what is called 'Mormonism') for a period of nearly 40 years -- he is a man of varied & extensive attainments & has lectured largely throughout Europe & America, & is, in every sense, worthy the attention of & acquaintance with men of letters, as well as the masses. I have no doubt Mr. Pratt would be pleased to lecture for you if requested. A letter addressed to 3918. P. O. Box. N. Y. City would teach him.

Yours with respect
Geo. A. Smith
