Dr Sir:--

There has been a Note for One Hundred and Forty Dollars in gold coin, dated at Birmingham, July 24 1868 and signed by yourself, payable to the order of Erastus Egan, turned over to me for use in
bringing out a poor family from England, and I wish you to make immediate payment thereof, as it is long past due, and remains wholly unpaid. And if you have not got the money, it is clearly your duty to sell whatever you may have that will bring money, and relieve yourself forthwith from this debt. By so doing you will oblige yourself and all concerned.
