November 12. 1869.

Col. C. G. Hammond,
Genl. Supt. U. P. R. R.

Dear Sir:-

I am in receipt of a telegram from Ogden, that for three days the track-layers on the Utah Central Railroad have been without iron, consequently, at this date, there has been but one half day's work done this week, & 225 men are now laying idle, involving a direct loss to the Co. of at least $1000 per day, & a far greater indirect loss, as our citizens are, in a great measure, depending on the completion of the road for their winter's fuel. Besides this, the season is so far advanced as to render it imperative that not even a single hour should be lost.

With this in view Mr. Wm. C. Staines of this city has been chosen to go east & to do all in his power in the interest of the U. C. Co. to forward the construction & equipment of the road.

Yours with respect

Brigham Young
