Mr. John C. Cashman.
"Young Men's Literary Union".
Pittsfield, Mass.

Dear Sir:-

On Sept. 17. your second invitation to me to lecture at Pittsfield, under the auspices of the "Young Men's Literary Union" reached my Office, as the first one did, while I was absent from this City.

I tender you my thanks for your courtesy, at the same time I must decline your invitation; as my business limits my travelling to this Territory.

I regret that Professor Pratt could not make it convenient to lecture for you, as he is, in every respect well qualified as a lecturer.

I take pleasure, however, in introducing to you Elder Samuel W. Richards of this City now on a visit to the east; he is a gentleman, well informed on every point of interest relating to our people, their religion & history -- as well as other subjects -- having been engaged in public speaking for a long series of years.

As the gentleman will present this in person, you will be able to make arrangements with himself
